Great! Ride today! Perfect weather (upper 50s, slight wind out of the south) and plenty of time made for a very happy Me today. My legs haven’t felt this good all year, either, even with the headwind…

Brrrrrr. 46 degrees when I left for my ride, and the internet said 43 when I got back. I was nice and warm, except for my thumb and index finger on each hand…those are kinda hurting now a bit! Did 3 10-minute tempo intervals, battling the worst wind EVER. Luckily, though, I headed out into the wind, making the last 40 minutes back to the dorm very easy, as I had the wind right behind...

Riding 2/23/08 →
I made a point of making a longer ride today. Left around 1:30 to meet David on the road and try out a new route. We both agree it’s our favorite route around Starkville so far. North on Old West Point Rd, then continue on that to within a mile of Andrew Dale’s house. Took the route back from his house to the highway, then past GTR and to Artesia, then back in on Sessums-Artesia Road....

Went out for another ride this afternoon after work. I did some sprint workouts about mid-ride, just to try to get that going again before racing season starts (hopefully) at the end of April. I felt pretty good, except for perhaps when I was doing those sprint things…ugh, heh… Time:      1:26 Distance: 37 Km Speed:     26.0 Km/hr

Riding in the Rain: 2/21/08 →
I was determined to ride today at lunch, even if my mountain biking plans with my dad had to be canceled because of lots of rain and muddy trails. hence, I set out just after 11:00 for a ride, clad warmly under a rain cover. I headed south on S. Montgomery past my house, cut left over to Oktoc, and then made my way back to campus via Artesia Rd. and Blackjack Rd. The drizzle wasn’t bad, not...

This morning, William and I…wait, except not William… I woke up and went running this morning. Because I was lonesome, I figured I would utilize the world’s best machine for solo running. It’s been a long long time since I’ve been on a treadmill. I ran a slower pace on the treadmill than I would have running, but I stayed consistent and didn’t stop during any...

Well, I got out for another ride today. Did almost 2 hours with David today, including some Tempo workouts. The weather was real nice - about 57 degrees, sunny, 5-10mph wind out of the Northwest. The only bad thing was realizing how much stronger David is than me when we did out workouts… Phooey. Time: 1:51 Distance: 49 km Speed: 26.5 km/hr

I got out on the bike for the first time in a week yesterday, and it was quite nice. The wind was blowing at around a zillion miles an hour, which could be a little unfun when I turned straight into it, but overall it was a real nice ride. Temperatures in the 70s were amazing - about my favorite temperature ever for riding! I got in 55 Km (sorry, I like my euro measurements for the bike…...

Had a good run this morning! Another 20 lap (2.5 mile) effort. We accidentally ran four untimed laps due to problems with the stopwatch operator (read: me). However, I timed the last 16, so we’ll take that average lap time and apply it to those missing four. Our overall plan (as we discussed on the walk back) is to “plateau” at three miles. Once we can nail that, we’re...

Today was easily my best day yet. Where I typically run 8 laps and take a bathroom break, I was able to make it 14 laps today. After a bathroom break, I was able to run 6 more, taking the last one at a pretty swift sprint and all out sprinting the last leg of it. Don’t have my watch near me, so the math is approximate. 32:08 total time 20 laps 2.5 miles ~1:36 per lap ~12:48 per mile

There was a fire drill in Griffis last night, so what better time to quickly change and go running? I couldn’t pass it up, so I ran 2.50 miles at the Sanderson track. Another run in the rain - Feb 3 →
I waited for that elusive hole in the rain today to go out for a run, hoping not to get too wet because the temperature was around 55 or so. My plan worked splendidly - for 25 minutes. I kept on though, thinking “well, why the hell not?”… Felt real good, even with semi-tired legs at the end. Ran again this morning…the walk over was the most brutal ever. The wind was coming in STRONG from the west and was chilling my bones. However, we made it. Air Force was only about half represented this morning, and stayed on the gym floor. William and I were 50% of the people running at any given time (66% at other times, and even 100% at one point). Run #2 →
I got out today about 11:00 for a nice run. The temperatures were in the mid 40s, which I think is about perfect for running. Retraced yesterday’s route for the most part, just backwards this time. My legs were a bit sore from yesterday and making the adaptation to running again, but overall I felt pretty good except for a short side stitch about halfway into the run. Time: 37 minutes...

I’m also tired of being tired! The sooner the better I get over this whatever-it-is and get back into a routine of moving. Splish splash, I was makin' a dash →
Well, I took my first run today. Headed out a little after 2:00, hoping not to get rained on too much because the radar and clouds were menacing. Traced a route over a nice, winding dirt road that cuts through the middle of some deep woods off campus. First I headed to Campus Book Mart, then took a right at the parking lot and dropped down through the neighborhood behind the store. The dirt road...

Not an impressive morning. I ran 6 laps, walked one, ran 3 before my calves were screaming for me to stop. I stopped, stretched and massaged them, but was only able to run 3 more after that. Not worth posting my time, it was pitiful. I can tell I’m getting better though. It takes me longer to develop a stitch (if at all) or to run out of breath. William decided to sleep in :-).

A change in direction →
Well, my optimism for the riding scene this semester has dimmed significantly. The coursework that comes with 19 hours of upper-level reading classes plus the rush induced by trying to finish up many things before Model Security Council kicks off in 2 weeks has left me bereft of much time to ride. Even after MMSC is done, though, I won’t have the sort of time I need to really train....

Awesomely enough, I had a meeting in the Sanderson Center Conference Room last night around 6:30PM. I took this as a sign that I should take some work out clothes with me and run a bit after the meeting concluded. It worked out really well. I ran 2.0 miles at an 8:00 pace, as I’ve done in the past. I also walked/ran another 0.5 miles to cool down afterward. Today Cumulative Distance Time...

It was a good morning back today. I was able to take a much-needed break from running on Monday to catch some extra Z’s, and it made today worth it. Today, I ran 10 laps without stopping (a relatively monumental accomplishment). On about lap 7 or 8, I developed a pretty bat stitch in my left side. At the beginning of lap 10, a stitch had formed in my right side as well. I pushed through it...

I try to raise the bar a few miles every time I do a weekly “long” run. This week’s goal was either 6.5 or 7.6 miles (depending on how I felt at the 5.1 mile mark, which is roughly how much I did last week, so I at least wanted to achieve that). Oddly enough, it got somewhat difficult around the 3 mile mark, and I started getting a side stitch. Thankfully though, I was able to...

Andy: Route for 21 January 2008 →
I got on Google Maps just a few minutes ago and plotted a route that I will take for my “long” run tomorrow. I planned on doing “long” runs on Sundays, but I was too tired and too scared (of the cold) to do one today. Thankfully tomorrow is a holiday! Anyway, the loop I plotted is 5.1 miles according to Google Maps, only slightly longer than the 5.0 miles I did last Sunday...

William and I hit the Sanderson again this morning. We started on an untimed lap (by my fault…forgot to start the watch), but I managed to start it on the second lap. After 5 of those (6 total) I was hampered by a bathroom break and got back on it a bit later. I ran 4 more for a total of 10 (not sure how many William ran while I was out). To do the math, I’ve estimated how long the...

Nothing seemed to be going on tonight, so I decided to do a short run at the Sanderson. I decided to try to get a reasonably accurate look at my pace, so I started right at 10:14:00PM according to the clock on the track. After making one round of the 1/8 mile track, I noticed it had taken me almost exactly 1 minute (+/- 2 or 3 seconds). I figured, well, that’s an 8:00 mile … I’ll...

William and I ran this morning, constantly zigzagging through the menagerie of Air Force ROTC guys (and girls) on the running track. I forgot my stopwatch, so I have no times to report. I ran 5 laps before my legs got really tight (from jumping at the Kentucky basketball game and standing in line from 5 to 6:30), so I walked a lap to stretch them out. I ran 4 more laps after that before my legs...

So, Yesterday was only my second ride in that week. Fortunately, it was for mostly one-time purposes. That’s mostly part of the first week getting settled in activities,...

William and I were at it again this morning, despite the chilly walk to the Sanderson. It was about 23 or 25 degrees outside. We ran while watching the ROTC guys on the floor do their training. I hit 10 laps while William hit 11. We finished at the same time again because on lap 8 William sped and met me again. I kept my pace. We finished at 15:28 for 10 and 11 laps. Started the first of a series of “long” Sunday runs this morning. I thankfully checked the Sanderson Center hours before I left and found that it doesn’t open until 13:00 on Sundays. So, at Owen’s suggestion, I plotted out a route using the streets that Google Maps knew around campus. I came up with a 5 mile loop that included running to the research park and around the...

Today, William and I enjoyed our second day of running. Temperatures of near freezing (36 F) led us to run in the Sanderson Center, where we can easily track our distance. We indeed ran the 1/8th mile track 8 times. William tacked on an extra lap, wracking up a mile and 1/8. We both finished at about the same time (13:08 by my stopwatch). My main goal is to trim that time and increase that...
